With profound sadness and heavy hearts, family, friends, classmates, and members of the Hinsdale community are mourning the heartbreaking and unexpected passing of Ethan Ortiz, who died on July 9, 2026, at the age of 19.
Ethan’s passing has left an immeasurable void in the lives of all who knew and loved him. Remembered as a compassionate, intelligent, and faith-driven young man, he touched countless lives with his warm spirit and genuine kindness.
Born in Chicago on May 11, 2007, Ethan was the beloved son of Erwin Ortiz and Natasha Phillips. From a young age, he showed curiosity, empathy, and a deep appreciation for those around him. Whether spending time with family, supporting friends, or pursuing his passions, he approached life with sincerity and enthusiasm that made him a joy to be around.
Ethan was a graduate of St Isaac Jogues School, where he built strong values and lasting friendships. He later attended Benet Academy as a member of the Class of 2025, where he was admired for his character and commitment to excellence. At the time of his passing, he was a student at the Grainger College of Engineering, pursuing a future driven by his passion for problem-solving and innovation.
He found joy in simple yet meaningful interests, including building with LEGO, enjoying music, and nurturing his faith, which guided his compassion, integrity, and quiet strength. Above all, Ethan treasured time with his family and friends, creating memories that will forever be cherished.
Ethan is survived by his loving parents, Erwin and Natasha; his siblings, Anika and Caleb; his grandparents Edilberto and Carmelita Ortiz, Rohan and Merle Phillips, and Larry Hebda; along with many aunts, uncles, cousins, and close friends. He was preceded in death by his great-grandmother Mary Phillips, great-aunt Aurora Mangahas, and Debbie Hebda.
As news of his passing has spread, heartfelt tributes have poured in from classmates, teachers, and community members, all remembering his kindness, bright smile, and willingness to uplift others.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, July 15, 2026, from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Adolf and Powell Funeral Home in Willowbrook. A Celebration of Life Mass will take place on Thursday, July 16, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at St Isaac Jogues Catholic Church in Hinsdale. Interment will be private at Clarendon Hills Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to The Guatemala Project in honor of Ethan’s generous spirit.
Though his life ended far too soon, Ethan Ortiz will be remembered as a devoted son, caring brother, cherished grandson, loyal friend, and a young man whose future was filled with promise. His legacy of kindness, faith, and compassion will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
