With deep sorrow, family, friends, and loved ones are mourning the loss of Tory J. Raether, a 55-year-old father from Charlotte, North Carolina, whose body was recovered after he went missing in Idaho’s Snake River during a family visit.
According to authorities, Raether disappeared on Saturday, July 4, after jumping into the Snake River at the popular Jumping Rock recreation area near the Sheep Gulch Boat Ramp, east of Alpine, Wyoming. Officials said he was not wearing a life jacket when he entered the water and soon began struggling against the strong current.
Those who were with him made immediate attempts to rescue him, but despite their efforts, they were unable to reach him. Raether had traveled to the region with his wife and one of his daughters to visit another daughter who lives in nearby Jackson, Wyoming.
Following his disappearance, Star Valley Search and Rescue, working under the direction of the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, launched an extensive search operation. Rescue crews searched daily using drones, rafts, jet skis, and boats, eventually expanding the search into the Palisades Reservoir as hopes of locating him continued.
On Saturday, July 11, one week after he went missing, campers at the McCoy Creek Campground spotted a body along the shoreline. They paddled out on a paddleboard before immediately notifying authorities. Search and rescue personnel, who were already conducting operations on the water, responded quickly and recovered Raether’s body.
His death has brought profound grief to his family, friends, and everyone who knew him. Loved ones remember Tory J. Raether as a devoted husband, loving father, and respected member of his community whose life was centered on family and meaningful relationships.
