Richard “Dick” D. Wood Jr., longtime president, chief executive officer, and chairman of Wawa, has passed away at the age of 88. His death marks the loss of a transformative business leader whose vision and values helped shape one of the most respected convenience retail brands in the United States.
Born on March 4, 1938, in Philadelphia, Richard D. Wood Jr. was educated at St. Paul’s School before earning a Bachelor of Science degree from University of Virginia and a law degree from University of Pennsylvania Law School. He built both a strong academic foundation and a lifelong commitment to leadership and service.
Wood joined Wawa in 1970 as the company’s first general counsel at the invitation of Grahame Wood. He quickly rose through the ranks, becoming president in 1977, CEO in 1980, and later chairman and CEO in 1982. Under his leadership, Wawa expanded significantly while maintaining a strong focus on customer experience, employee ownership, and community values.
Over more than five decades with the company, Wood became known for his philosophy of servant leadership—a people-first approach that shaped Wawa’s culture and long-term success. Even after retiring as CEO in 2004, he remained actively involved as chairman and later Chairman Emeritus in 2020, marking 50 years of service to the organization.
Beyond business, Wood was deeply committed to philanthropy, particularly in children’s healthcare. He was a major supporter of Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, where his contributions helped establish the Richard D. Wood Center for Fetal Diagnosis and Treatment. He also supported community initiatives such as Bok Tower Gardens, reflecting his dedication to improving lives beyond the corporate world.
Following news of his passing, tributes have poured in from colleagues, employees, and community leaders. Current Wawa CEO Chris Gheysens honored him as a guiding force whose leadership philosophy continues to define the company today.
To celebrate his legacy, Wawa announced that coffee will be offered free at all locations on July 20, allowing customers and associates to remember and honor the man who helped build the brand into what it is today.
Richard D. Wood Jr. will be remembered not only as a visionary executive but also as a compassionate leader, devoted family man, and generous philanthropist. His legacy of service, humility, and innovation will continue to inspire generations to come. May he rest in peace.
